Tips for planning a family vacation
Have you ever experienced one of those dreadful family trips where everything goes wrong? We’ve all been on a poorly planned family trip at some point. So, if you are planning for family vacations and want them to be a success, I have prepared a few helpful tips for planning a family vacation to ensure that you and your loved ones have the best time possible.
Tips on Planning for Family Vacations
Here are a few tips that will help you please everyone by planning the best family vacation our family has ever taken:
Decide Where You Want To Go
This is one of the most challenging aspects of organizing a family vacation because it is difficult to please everyone in this regard. Some people want to live their tropical dreams and visit places like Hawaii or Bora Bora, while others want to see the Eiffel Tower and visit Paris, while others want to live their Arab fantasies in the deserts of Dubai.
So, how do you reach a decision? The ideal way to pick where to go is for everyone to write down the names of the places they want to see and set them in a bowl. Then, one person can pick out a paper, and you can all organize a trip to that location. You may even want to keep record of everything before and after with this vacation planner.
Decide On a Budget
When you’ve decided where you want to travel, set a budget and book hotels, flights, and activities accordingly. Setting a budget before doing anything else is a fantastic saving method. This will help you stay within your budget, and if you plan well, you may even be able to save some money for a future family trip.
Determine the Length of Your Trip
Another critical step is determining how long you can go on a trip. Consider issues such as how long you will be off work and how long your children’s vacations will be if they attend school. To avoid problems later on, decide after considering all of these factors.
Ask Other Parents for Advice
Asking other parents for tips for planning a family vacation may be the best tip yet! Recommendations on what they wish they had brought or done from a first hand account is pure gold. Inquire with parents about their travels, what they would do differently, and where they regret going and why.
The answers to all of these questions will assist you in making an informed decision. Parents can tell you about kid-friendly destinations if you have infants, which can be helpful.
Plan Fun Activities That You Can Do As a Family
Family vacations are not only about traveling and having fun but about bonding and making memories as a family. So make sure to plan fun group activities you and your family can do together to make the most of the trip. Planning for family vacations does not have to be stiff and schedule oriented all the time. Have fun!
Make Everyone Happy
A family trip is about making sure everyone has a good time. These tips for planning a family vacation will help you do just that! Maybe one of your children wants to go to an amusement park, and the other wants to take a safari. You could plan every day accordingly to make sure everyone gets to enjoy their wishes.
Considering everyone’s wishes of what they would like to do on the trip will help you make sure nobody feels alienated and everyone comes back home with a smile.
Inform Your Card Companies of Your Travel Plans
When going on family holidays, some people make the significant error of forgetting to notify their bank that they will be traveling. What happens next might be disastrous since your credit cards may be blocked, leaving you on vacation with no cash.
Carry multiple credit and debit cards with you at all times to ensure you have a backup in case of an unfortunate situation, such as losing your card.
Make a Checklist of All Essential Documents
Imagine arriving at the airport and realizing that one of your children’s passports is missing. To ensure this doesn’t happen I like to use a family passport holder. Put together a list of all the documentation you’ll need for your family and children. The list should include the following documents:
- Every family member’s passport
- Your hotel reservations’ printouts or electronic receipts
- A copy of your travel itinerary
- Tickets (train, cruise, airplane, or bus)
- Photo identification (this may be required for you to be allowed to visit various places, from museums to parks and hotels)
- List of essential addresses (places you want to visit, directions to your hotel, and home addresses of friends and family you plan to visit, etc.)
- Travel manuals
- Scanned copies of all essential documents on your phone
Tips for Traveling With Children
When traveling with children, planning for family vacations becomes even more important. Here are a few pointers for traveling with kids that will help you avoid mistakes and guarantee your kids have fun.
- If you are taking a road trip, make your kids chew on mint and keep paper bags if someone vomits. Opening one window while traveling for long times in a car can also help you reduce the chances of anyone getting car sick
- Pack board games or download fun applications on your phones or tablets to keep children busy during long flights
- Plan fun activities for your children to make the experience unforgettable for them
- Educate your children about the culture of the places you visit and teach them to respect and appreciate other cultures
Planning for their basic needs
- You don’t want to deal with hangry kids on your road trip, so pack healthy snacks and plenty of water because you never know when kids get hungry
- Pack extra clothes for your children because poopy disasters and sand castle making on the beach may result in you needing more clothes than you packed, and you don’t want to be washing clothes while on vacation
- Pack a first aid kit with over-the-counter medication for any accidents, as you never know when your little ones might get tummy aches or motion sickness from all the traveling
- Pack your children’s bags keeping in mind the weather of the destination you are visiting to ensure you have all appropriate clothing items
- Select kid-friendly hotels that have specific activities for children, such as lifeguards at the pool or kid’s play area
- Pack toys to keep your little ones entertained for times when you are relaxing in your hotel
- Try to schedule your flight around your baby’s nap time to save yourself from the wrath of a cranky and sleepy baby when you reach your destination
- Talk to your kids about the trip to mentally prepare them for it. Maybe even treat them to some kid luggage!
- Do a head count when you are about to board your flight to make sure you accidentally don’t end up making a remake of home alone
